SEX WORKERS FIGHT TO LEGALISE THEIR TRADE

Durban – “We choose to work in the sex industry, and we want to continue our trade without fear of harassment and abuse, by the public and members the SAPS,” said a memorandum handed to Department of Justice acting regional head, Mable Ramela, reported the Daily News on Friday.
According to the report, the handing over of the memorandum was part of a national movement to decriminalise sex work. The initiative was headed by Sisonke sex workers’ movement.
The group said the law against sex work is driving the stigma attached to the industry, and
making sex workers vulnerable.
The memorandum also states that when sex workers have been sexually assaulted, they are denied justice. Also, they claim that they are not taken seriously by authorities and are unable to report the crime.
The group called for the justice department make progress with legislative reforms and decriminalise sex work.
Under South African legislation, the voluntary selling and/or buying of sex, and all related activities, are criminal offences.
